Simon and Garfunkel sang about a lonely man, safe and secure in his apartment, immune to pain and disappointment as he declares himself a rock and an island. No Love… No hurt.

We can feel very secure in our rentals or mortgaged homes, able to dodge most financial storms by never taking risks. In the evenings, we can watch other people on TV living the lives we wish we had.

The very act of placing one foot in front of the other makes us vulnerable. Will we trip, slip, or step onto dangerous ground? 

Every step of progress places us into unfamiliar territory.

I remember climbing a very tall pine – taking my sweaty palms and fear of heights with me to the top. It was spectacular, but very scary!

The higher we climb, the greater the risk, and the better the view.

Life is worth the risk.
