So, guess which song I’m going to have in my brain for the rest of the day?
George Harrison wrote the quoted lyrics in a song (“It’s All Too Much”), more than fifty years ago. It was a song to express his love for his wife and for the beauty of the world in general.
To me, the sentiment “All the world is birthday cake, so take a piece,” brings to mind another quote, this one from the movie “Auntie Mame”: “Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!”
The world contains many treasures, delicacies, curiosities, delights, amusements, and challenges to keep us amazed and entertained forever! They are there for the taking. Take, and enjoy!
Of course, we recognize that for many people, these same treats are not available as they are for us.
Two points:
- How much more, then, does that highlight the fact that we who do have access have almost a responsibility to partake, even if just not to have them go to waste?
- Isn’t it interesting that some of the most fulfilled, satisfied, grateful people have very little, while many who live in abundance complain of what they don’t have?
The last part of the quote is also interesting: Take a piece, but not too much. Whatever George meant by this, I take this to mean that we don’t hog ourselves on cake and leave others with nothing; or, possibly, that we don’t overindulge on the good things and become sick later. Moderation (recognition of “enough”) is a noble art.
Enjoy your cake!
